This is a list of 20 writing prompts for elementary grades 3 - 5. Prompt topics include creative storytelling, narrative nonfiction, and how-to instructions.
 
Depending on your students and their needs, you could also use it for other grade levels. This list can get you through a semester of weekly writing assignments, it can be used with sub plans, or it can be an entire year of bi-weekly writing assignments. It has become harder to find the time to incorporate explicit writing lessons in today's school environment, but these prompts can help. Put them in a writing center, independent work folders during reading groups, use for homework assignments, journaling, writer's workshop, and/or peer editing. For extension, let students illustrate their writing and share with a partner.
