'Tis the (Spooky) Season: 5 Ghost Tours to Explore

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

'Tis the season! No, not that season; it's October, and the spooky season of Halloween is upon us. For many people, Halloween is their favorite time of year and there are plenty of ghostly ways celebrate it. But rather than going to a homemade "haunted" house in your neighborhood, why not take a tour of the real thing? Ghost tours are a fun and popular way to have a little spooky fun. Probably every city has its own tales of ghosts and haunted places, but some are more famous than others. Whether you love to scare yourself or you just enjoy a historical walking tour, here are some spooky ghost tours to check out:

The Outer Banks of NC is often called the most haunted beach in America. That's not really surprising, considering its waters are known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic due to the large number of shipwrecks there. In this tour, you'll be led through downtown Manteo by lantern light as your guide tells the haunted history of the Outer Banks. As a fun bonus, you get to use a ghost detector during the tour, so you can decide for yourself if it's really haunted.

What city could have more ghosts than the site of the Salem Witch Trials? This 2-hour walking tour is led by a local historian who brings the city's 400-year history alive. You can choose the time of day for your tour, but obviously the spookiest version is led by lantern light at night. You'll visit the Burying Point Cemetery, Witch House, and Ropes Mansion garden as your guide tells stories of the haunted history of Salem, including the horrors of the witch trials.

Bisbee was founded as a copper, gold, and silver mining town in 1880, so it has a colorful past that likely includes a few ghastly events. This walking tour takes you through the streets, old alleys, and stairways of the town's most haunted areas. Some of the ghosts who are said to haunt these places include Julia, a "lady of the evening," Nat the miner who owed money and paid for it with his life, and the Lady in White who saved the lives of three children.

St. Augustine is America's oldest city, so it's not surprising there are many stories of paranormal activity and spooky encounters. You'll visit and learn about the city's most haunted places. But those who are easily spooked beware: you might have trouble falling asleep after this tour!

New Orleans is arguably America's most haunted city. Its history is full of disaster, disease, and voodoo that has led to reports of paranormal activity and haunted sites. On this 2-hour walking tour you'll visit the eeriest and most infamous locations in the French Quarter while the guide shares stories of ghosts and hauntings that have been historically researched and documented. Book the 8 pm tour for the spookiest experience.
