Updated: Mar 25, 2024

Since many of us are snowed under this winter, it might be hard to believe that spring is just around the corner. And warm weather means the return of outdoor music! In fact, music festivals are gearing up right now for the upcoming season. From the soulful melodies of jazz to the electrifying beats of rock and roll, music festivals offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant sounds of diverse cultures and genres. If you love music, there are a few festivals you really need add to your bucket list. And while there are fantastic music festivals all over the world, today I'm going to share 5 must-see music festivals in/around the US.

There's no better place to kick off our musical journey than in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana, home to the iconic New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, affectionately known as Jazzfest. Celebrated annually since 1970, this legendary festival pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the region. It is held during the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May each year, and over the past few years it's grown to include Thursdays of each weekend. Granted, the main acts are not usually jazz musicians; they typically include major artists of all genres, like the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty (he last played there just before his death in 2017), The Foo Fighters, and Ludacris. But there are also great local bands that offer a dynamic blend of jazz, blues, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, and more. Tickets go on sale early in the year, so plan accordingly.

Memphis, Tennessee, is the birthplace of blues, soul, and rock and roll. Each May, the city comes alive with the Memphis in May International Festival, a month-long celebration of music, culture, and cuisine. One of the highlights of this festival is the Beale Street Music Festival, which features an impressive lineup of renowned artists spanning multiple genres, from classic rock legends to up-and-coming indie sensations. Whether you're grooving to the legendary tunes of BB King on Beale Street or exploring the historic Sun Studio, where Elvis Presley recorded his first hit, Memphis in May offers a one-of-a-kind musical pilgrimage for fans of all ages.

Set against the backdrop of a sprawling 700-acre farm in Manchester, Bonnaroo boasts an eclectic lineup of over 150 artists across multiple stages, ranging from mainstream headliners to emerging underground acts. Beyond the music, festival-goers can immerse themselves in a diverse array of art installations, workshops, and interactive experiences, making Bonnaroo a true mecca for music lovers and free spirits alike. It typically starts the second Thursday in June and lasts four days.
